Transition Newborn Nursery
The Transition Newborn Nursery is staffed around-the-clock with registered nurses trained especially for nursery care. Nurses obtain vital statistics on the newborn -- weight, length, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature. The infants are placed in a radiant warmer with a gold heart applied to the chest that measures the baby's temperature to make sure baby is not too warm or cold.
Your baby's physician is notified of admission to the transition nursery. An initial bath is given after the two stable body temperature measurements. Parents may choose to video tape the baby's first bath. The baby is weaned to a crib after obtaining two more stable temperatures (one hour apart).
The baby will remain in the transition nursery for two to four hours (longer if there are any concerns). Once the baby weans to the crib, he or she can join the mother on the postpartum unit and one nurse will provide care for both mother and baby.
So your physician can better care for your child, it is the desire of the physicians that all babies return to the nursery each morning for physician rounds. This usually occurs from 6 - 9 a.m. After rounds, your baby will return to your room. Once the physician has made rounds, he or she will visit with you and provide a current update on your baby.
Circumcisions
Circumcisions are done in the Transition nursery by the baby's physician or one of their partners after obtaining an informed consent. Most of the physicians use local anesthesia when performing the procedure. The procedure is usually done prior to discharge. You will be instructed on how to care for the circumcision.
Infant Security
The Transition Nursery staff is available to provide care for your baby at your convenience. For infant security, mom and baby are given identifying bracelets in delivery. A fourth bracelet is given to the significant other or coach IF, and only IF, he or she is present in the delivery. Each and every time the baby is given to you by the nursing staff, ID bands MUST be checked.
For your baby's safety, please look for the designated HILLCREST BADGE which is worn by Associates at all times before letting anyone remove your child from the room.
