Junior Volunteers

WHAT IS A JUNIOR VOLUNTEER?

No longer referred to as "candystripers", this program takes a more serious approach because of the many duties delegated to our teens. Junior Volunteer is more appropriate due to the responsibilities, the program including both genders and the Hillcrest associates’ expectations of each volunteer. Junior Volunteers are not exempt from similar duties that are delegated to adult volunteers.

WHAT DOES A JUNIOR VOLUNTEER DO?

The opportunities vary from assisting at nursing stations or offices to retailing in the Gift Shop.

Juniors assigned to nursing stations MUST VISIT THE PATIENTS, help at the nurses’ desk, assists in errands, etc. Though there may be a slow moment, you are expected to remain on duty unless advised otherwise.

Many office and departmental requests come our way. These can be daily, weekly or last minute! It is very possible that every Junior will be given this assignment in addition to another placement. Project-related requests may include assembling packets, entertaining children, helping in various screenings and drives, mail-outs and more.

The volunteer program is taking on a new direction as we are experiencing change throughout the Hillcrest Health System. With change comes heightened expectations and this creates a new challenge such as the change in the volunteer uniforms or the increase in requests for volunteer assistance. Junior Volunteers are expected to demonstrate leadership qualities in this setting and to work together as a team.
