Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women in America. One out of every seven American women will develop breast cancer sometime in their life.

To help combat breast cancer, the Breast Screening Center at Hillcrest opened in October of 1985 in the Hillcrest Medical Tower. The Center is certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Food and Drug Administration, and . The Breast Screening Center takes appointments for women 35 and older from 7:10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Call 4-6 weeks in advance for a routine screening exam.

The Associates in the Breast Screening Center make the exam process easy for the patient. Whether worried about the exam itself, the results, or a little of both, our Associates will work to calm the patients' fears. Even the lobby, decorated similar to a living room, helps create a calming atmosphere for patients.

Having regularly scheduled mammograms has a direct link to breast cancer survival rates in women ages 35-49. A mammogram shows changes in breast tissue and can help locate cancers too small to be found through self-exams. Remember, the sooner a cancer is discovered the smaller it may be, and small cancers have a higher cure rate.

Central Texan women with breast cancer are able to begin treatment at the earliest stages, thanks to three grants totaling more than $57,000 from  Susan G. Komen For the Cure of Central Texas. Hillcrest is grateful for all the partners we share to improve women's health!

The Breast Screening Center works with the American Cancer Society and the Family Practice Clinic to provide a low cost mammogram for patients meeting certain guidelines. In most cases insurance, including Medicare, covers mammograms performed annually.

Tips when preparing for a mammogram.

  1. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing deodorants and powders--metallic items may interfere with the accuracy of the image.
  2. For a more comfortable exam, schedule mammograms for the week after the onset of your period.
  3. Bring previous mammograms for comparison.
