Fentress Cancer Center
The Clara and Harlon Fentress Cancer Center supports and provides quality care for patients requiring radiation oncology services. Designed with comfort and convenience in mind, the Hillcrest Fentress Cancer Center has provided radiation treatments to more than 6,600 Central Texans in the last 25 years. The Fentress Cancer Center is connected to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center by an enclosed corridor, making a convenient passage for patients requiring hospital services or hospitalization.
The associates in the Hillcrest Fentress Cancer Center offer a highly-integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. Associates work closely with many areas in the Hillcrest Health System and with resources in the community to better serve patients and their families during the course of treatment. Ninety-five percent of patients seen at the Fentress Cancer Center are outpatients who can fit therapy into their daily routine with minimal disruption.
Radiation oncology is a clinical and scientific specialty devoted to the management of patients with cancer and a few selected non-malignant conditions through the use of ionizing radiation alone, or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy.
Available Treatment Options
- The Fentress Cancer Center offers highly sophisticated external beam radiation therapy services utilizing two linear accelerators with high-energy X-ray and electron beams.
- A three-dimensional computer treatment planning system is used to plan treatments and is connected by fiber optic cable to Radiology Department CT scanners for ready access to the patient's CT scan images.
- Radioactive implants are also offered through the Fentress Cancer Center and Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, including: Temporary cesium implants for gynecological malignancies; iridium implants for bronchial lesions; permanent seed implants for prostate cancer treatment and low dose rates.
The associates at the Fentress Cancer Center are dedicated to providing Central Texans quality radiation therapy services where patients and their families are an integral part of the treatment decision process. The Hillcrest Fentress Cancer Center works closely with other oncology centers throughout Texas in providing necessary radiation services locally. Consultations are available on a physician referral basis. After consultation, Hillcrest associates are able to assist with scheduling appointments with various physicians, oncology centers or other providers as needed or requested by the patient and family.

In 2009, 663 cancer cases were reported to the state.

Results of the Breast Conservation Study show that Hillcrest is above the recommended rate per the Approved National Breast Program requirement of a minimum of 50% lumpectomies.
Hillcrest Statistics: 48 breast cancer cases - 33 patients underwent a lumpectomy, 18 patients underwent a mastectomy.
Hillcrest Percentages: 68% lumpectomy, 37.5% mastectomy.
