General Information
Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and Scott & White Healthcare are investing $4.5 million in an expansion project officials say will bring new medical services to Central Texas and help position Waco as one of the nation’s premier sites for rehabilitative care. The two health care providers announced their plans Monday to combine their rehabilitation units into a single new center to be located at Hillcrest’s Herring Avenue campus. Set to open in September, the facility will be called the Scott & White Center for Rehabilitative Medicine.
The Scott & White Center for Rehabilitative Medicine adds 9,000 square feet of gymnasium space for specialized physical therapy. The new center features a unique service offering called a "transitional living area," an overnight apartment/living space where families will learn and adjust to the special needs of a rehabilitation patient in the surroundings of a typical home. Construction is doubling the dining room space and adding a lounge area for the patients, families and visitors. With an average length of stay of about 13 days, comfort for the patient, and the family and friends that visit them, is an important part of the healing process.More than beds, the greater size of the new center will provide room for more and higher levels of service. When complete, this center will become the only facility in Central Texas accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The expanded facility and center will be an inpatient rehabilitation center of excellence to the communities of Central Texas, providing service areas that patients currently must travel out of Central Texas to find. This center of excellence will provide greater levels of care for patients who experience the more serious cases of stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injuries, amputations, and complex pain management issues. Securing the special CARF accreditation for stroke care is planned for next year, and then accreditation for traumatic brain injuries three years after that.
Education for the next generation of physicians and therapists is a key aspect of the new center, and a feature that is unique in Central Texas. The new center will be one of the sites for a future Scott & White medical residency program in physical medicine and rehabilitation that will help provide four years of specialty training for recent medical school graduates. And, for physical therapists who have earned their professional doctoral degree, a two-year physical therapy post-doctoral residency program will be launched featuring a concentration in neurological disorders.
